Hummel to sponsor Bafowethu
The South African Homeless squad,
Bafowethu, have received a major boost ahead of their participation at the
Homeless World Cup in Copenhagen, Denmark, with Hummel coming on board as the
new technical sponsor.
After Nike decided to discontinue their
relationship after last year¡¯s World Cup in Cape Town, Bafowethu had been left
without a sponsor and battling for a supplier with the global showcase nearing.
The 5th edition of the street football showcase runs from July 24 to
August 4 and an eight-member team has already been selected and has been
continuously in training preparing for the finals.
David Abrahams,
president of the Western Cape Street Soccer League and co-ordinator for the
travelling team, expressed delight about the new deal that has suddenly shot the
team¡¯s confidence to the sky.
¡°Hummel have been absolutely amazing for
us and I am glad that they are coming on board in such a huge way. The team has
been kitted in Hummel apparel ? tracksuits, kit, socks and even suits. So we
will really be a representative side with full vibe for the games.
¡°We
really appreciate the efforts of Hummel and we are working on making the
relationship go beyond the World Cup,¡± says Abrahams.
Henrik Lauritzen,
from Hummel Africa, said taking up the Homeless team was a way of taking up a
new adventure at grassroots level.
¡°It is really an opportunity for us
to work with disadvantaged guys. We hope that even after the World Cup something
positive comes out for these guys so that they go on to absorbed into society
and make a positive step in life away from the streets,¡± says Lauritzen.
The Homeless World Cup team coached by Sadick Da Silva will be
accompanied to the Scandinavian country by Cape Town¡¯s Deputy Mayor Charlotte
Williams.
